Hiya, my name is Jamila. I am a 23 year old College of Charleston graduate, who is currently living in Tochigi, Japan as an Assistant Language Teacher (ALT).
Why I write this blog?
1). To be famous: haha … but in all seriousness to document my time here. Being on JET is such an amazing opportunity that I know many people wish to be a part of. I didn’t really document my time in Japan the first time around, so I’m going to try and keep up with every good and bad moment here.
2). To Share: Share my experience not only a foreigner, but as a young black women living in a country where being black is almost non-existent. As a women who was previously in the position of searching through plenty of google pages to find blogs about black women living in Japan, I understand the disappointment when realizing that they were few and far between. So I want to share my experiences that will hopefully help the next young black women coming here.
3). To inspire: Probably the most important reason in my eyes. I know there are many black people out there who are to scared to even think about taking this opportunity. Just because your skin is bro doesn’t mean you should be held back from doing the things you want to do. So for all those young quirky kids of color who are constantly told “Black people don’t this!” This is especially for you.
